hi all

ben here again

on 2-3th july, 2 teams from TP were sent to SyScan 09 Capture The Flag compertition,

and the TP teams had won the first place and $10,000 cash worth of prize money for themself.

here an extract by the TP team leader Phone Myint:

Capture the Flag (CTF) is a very exciting form of cyber security game that would pit the skills of cyber security enthusiasts against one another. Besides all the fun and excitement, CTF can serves as a realistic introduction to what cyber warfare is all about for cyber security professionals. This competition is well recognized globally and the participants are either professionals or students from all across Asia.

In CTF, the objective is to score as many points as possible by successfully defending one’s cyber infrastructure against attacks and to successfully attack other team’s cyber infrastructure.

Each team consists of up to 3 players. The competition had a total of 8 teams from professionals and students. Temasek Informatics & IT School, Diploma in Cyber and Digital Security has sent two teams to compete in this competition. Both teams were led and supervised by lecturer Phone Myint, The two teams were known as “Bandwidth Killers” and “Musique”. Bandwidth killers consists of student Brandon Lum and Nicholas Foong and Musique consists of student Daryl Woo and Hamzah.

The configurations of the infrastructure will include numerous vulnerable services. Participants with reverse engineering and exploitation skills will have an advantage over participants without. Besides the cyber infrastructure, each team will be provided with 3 computers as consoles for launching their vicious attacks or putting up their strong defenses. The two teams were at the competition site 24 hours before the start of the competition, and configured the systems for defense as well as offense for the actual competition.

The Team Defenders will act as systems administrators who are responsible for defending the critical assets in the environment. Defenders will be scored based on their ability to defend their critical systems and services up without interruption. They are also required to respond to ‘injects’ - specific tasks that will be emailed to them and require a response/action within a specific amount of time. Team “Musique” from TP scored the highest score in the defensive tactics where “Bandwidth Killers” placed second in place for the defense.

Offensive is another way of scoring in this competition. The offensive performance is based on the ability to corrupt the flags of other teams, obtain execute privileges on the other Teams’ systems and keep the access open at all times by backdooring or using alternatives way to control of the systems. TP’s “Bandwidth Killers” scored the highest in the offensive tactics.

In the beginning, all teams started with 0 points. Points are deducted from a team for failing to defend assets, system compromises, corrupted flags, and incomplete injects, and points are added to teams which can successfully attack other teams’ systems. The team with the highest score wins. After adding up the scores for offense, defense and flags, “Bandwidth Killers” won the first prize overall. Musique has won the highest mark for defensive team. Bandwidth Killers were awarded SGD 10,000 for being the winners.

JAE (Joint Admission Exercise) - Scholarships

This year, for IIT School and Temasek Polytechnic, we are offering full-scholarships to outstanding applicants who performed and achieved well on their "O" level results and has passion for IT. sponsored by iDA Singapore. What's so good about this scholarship? Well it's bond-free, meaning after you graduated, you are not bonded to serve or pay back the money in any way.

Is that the ONLY scholarship available? No. We've got the
Companies Sponsorship/Scholarships for outstanding students.

Finally, Companies scholarship is sponsored by big IT companies like Cisco, Microsoft, Oracle, Sun Microsystems, BT Frontline (IT Security) and Avaya. It will cover tuition fees and a book allowance; full scholarship, 3 years, no bond attached as well.

Since tomorrow is the last day, if you want to know more about the scholarship, come and talk to our lecturers at the counselling booth of IIT School, right near at the entrance of the JAE booths. Our JAE code is T15: Cyber & Digital Security (:

As always, we want true, passionate and strong-willed students to join us to become the "Defenders of the Cyber World". The number of applicants are increasing as I'm blogging now! If you want to know our cut off point (COP) last year, it was 16. Hope it helps for you to decide and any further queries, you can leave comments on this post! We will get back to you ASAP. Cheers and see you at TP! Let's grab this chance now!

TP Rawks!

Hi fellow earthlings! I'm sure New Year was a blast!!!!! So, happy new year to everyone!

About a month ago, Temasek Polytechnic held the TPRawks where many fresh O' level graduates paid a visit to our second home, Temasek Polytechnic. =D. And if you missed it, not to worry there will always be the open house to attend. Speaking of which, I'm getting all pumped up for it! The crowd, the the noise, the cheers, the company, the booths, the freebies and the atmosphere! Whoo! I'm so looking forward to it, and I'm sure you guys are too!

Anyway, here are some pictures taken during TPRawks. Pictures from our very own IBM lab, coupled with little brothers and sisters from many different secondary schools, all engulfed by our warm hearted Cyber Digital Security/IITSC student helpers. Enjoy..

These were the friendly neighbourhood students from Cyber Digital Security. Kudos to them. And of course not forgetting Mike, the handsom-est lecturer in gray. =D
